Tetanus is a serious disease of the nervous system that iscaused by a toxin-producing bacterium . The disease causes muscle spasms, particularly of the jaw and musclea around the neck. Tetanus is commonly presented as lockjaw.
What is Tetanus?
Tetanus is a bacterial infection that enters the body through open wounds, cuts, or puncture injuries then the bacteria produce enough toxins that attack the nervous system, leading to muscle stiffness, spasms, and rigidity.
Causes and Risk Factors
The following are Risk factors associated with tetanus;
- Contaminated wounds or injuries
- Poor wound care
- Lack of vaccination
- Exposure to animal feces or soil
- people with weakened or compromised mmune system

Symptoms
The average time from infection to appearance of signs and symptoms (incubation period) is 10 days. The incubation period can range from 3 to 21 days. Some of the symptoms of tetanus include the following:
- Muscle stiffness and rigidity
- Jaw stiffness (lockjaw)
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
- Sweating
- Rapid heart rate
- Difficulty swallowing
